Emerging Perspectives

Developing the next generation of theatre makers

Our Artist Development programme provides a range of opportunities for emerging theatre makers living and working in the East Midlands, each focused on bridging the gap between training and working in the industry:

Artists
Every year we work with a group of emerging East Midlands artists, who might include performers, designers, composers and visual artists or storytellers, to create an exciting new touring production over a 6 month period. The training session period involves hands on practical work with established artists and attendance at masterclasses with major practitioners from the industry. In 2017 this production will see emerging artists working with theatre-maker Michael Pinchbeck to create a new piece inspired by John Berger's novel, A Fortunate Man

Associates
Each year we offer targeted support to an East Midlands based company and artist, to aid their development through artistic and dramaturgical support as well as developing business skills or practical advice on touring work. Each mentoring programme is outcome driven and tailored to suit the individual needs of the company/artist. Through this programme we aim to equip artists with skills, knowledge and advice that will help them to achieve their ambitions.

Masterclasses
Every year we curate a series of inspiring masterclass sessions with major figures from the theatre and arts industry as part of our wider Artist Development programme. These targeted sessions provide opportunities for East Midlands theatre-makers to work in a detailed, practical way accessing a range of ground-breaking artists and companies.

Writers
Each year we work with emerging writers who live, work or study in the East Midlands; supporting writers at different stages in their development. We currently have two strands to our writer development - our audio project, Haunts, and our competition, called Long Play. Haunts is a 4 month training project offering early career writers from the East Midlands the opportunity to write a ten minute dramatic work, set in a location of their choosing. Our Long Play Competition runs every two years and is for full length play scripts. The winner receives 6 months dramaturgical support, a public reading and a fee on the decision to produce their play. You can apply for the Haunts programme until Weds 22 February and submissions for Long Play open in Nov 2017.

Workshop activity
We have offered a range of workshop activity in primary and secondary schools, both linked to our productions and standalone sessions, including targetted programmes supporting transition.
